Please pass this on…..
3 years ago, a young college student at West Virginia University named Ryan Diviney was brutally beaten by two complete strangers his age. They beat him so bad that he was left with severe brain damage. The two attackers showed no remorse whatsoever for the pain they have caused this family. Ryan’s family has now sacrificed everything for their son and brother in hopes that he will recover one day and regain complete consciousness. This story is both inspiring and tragic but goes to show how truly strong one family can be. Please take the time to read what Ryan’s little sister (Kari) has written about her older brother and the brutal attack he endured. Please repost and visit Ryan’s website to find out more about his family and his daily progress at www.RyansRally.org
Kari Diviney- “If you are reading this post this the last picture of the last time I ever saw my big brother conscious. It is the last time I saw his smile, hugged him, or heard his voice. In this picture I was visiting him at his school, West Virginia
University. We were at a WVU football game and it was one of the best nights of my life. He was only 20 years old in this picture as a sophomore in his fall semester, and I was an 18 year old senior in high school. I am now 21 and a junior at West Virginia University.
On November 7, 2009 my brother was brutally attacked in the parking lot of Dairy Mart on Wiley Street. After an argument broke out about the world series video surveillance shows my brother back pedaling away from the group in self defense. One boy from the group (Jonathan May) ran up to my brother and sucker punched him so hard he got knocked off his feet. This caused his head to hit a metal sewer which immediately knocked him unconscious.
Following Jonathan May’s punch, one of his friends from the group, Austin Vantrease, ran up and viciously kicked my unconscious brother in the head (which described from a witness said it looked as though he was punting a football). The impact immediately sent my brother into a seizure with blood exiting from his mouth and ears.
My then 20 year old brother has been in a coma ever since. He is now 23 years old, an innocent man, stuck in his body…his own prison, for no reason. Anyone who knows Ryan knows he did not deserve this. He was maliciously attacked by people he didn’t even know, people who didn’t even attend WVU, complete strangers. No person in their right mind would kick an unconscious man while he was down. Neither of the boys called an ambulance or turned themselves in, they simply watched from behind the dumpster as my brother nearly died, then proceeded on to a party. If my brother wasn’t found by a Morgantown Police officer, Jimmy Smith, he would have likely died in that parking lot.
Ryan was the funniest most caring and passionate person I have ever known. He is my big brother and always will be. I will always look up to him. Ryan has protected me all my life and has made me who I am today, and I never thought I, as his little sister, would ever lose him. But I lost my brother, the person I most looked up to, the person I thought was invincible, my hero. Now my family and I live a life not knowing if we will ever get him back, ever see that shining and contagious smile again, ever hear his laugh…
He will forever be stuck as a 20 year old sophomore at West Virginia University…as his attackers will go on with their pathetic lives.
Jonathan May has been released from jail about a year ago. Austin Vantrease is still in prison with no remorse for his actions. He and his family have not reached out or put a penny toward my brother’s care. This July Austin will be attempting his 3rd try at parole. The most we can do for my brother is try and keep this malicious felon in prison as long as we can.
If you are reading this, no matter WHO you are, you can help us keep Austin Vantrease in Prison till the year 2015. My brother, an innocent victim’s life is forever changed. He can’t speak for himself, eat for himself, think for himself, tell us if he is in pain… nothing. The least we can do is get my brother the justice he so very deserves.
Please share this story and sign this Petition to keep Austin Vantrease in prison for his full sentencing and deny his parole attempts. He will one day get his life back, my brother… we can only pray.
